Food:

After the tour, we will have a sit down buffet style dinner and our meeting/announcements at the Deer Valley Lodge located adjacent to the Vortex facility. Deer Valley Lodge is located at 401 Industrial Drive, just west of the Vortex site.

Main Presentation Highlights:

This meeting is a tour of the new facility. We will meet in the parking lot in front of the building and break into groups. Vortex has been generous with their offer to allow us to tour their beautiful facility, but are sensitive to unsupervised people in the building. Please respect their concerns, stay with your tour guide, and refrain from wandering off!

Vortex Optics is building a new world headquarters, factory, and warehouse in Barneveld, which is about 30 minutes west of Madison on Hwy 18-151.  They have grown out of their current facility in Middleton and purchased most of the industrial park and some additional lands (totaling ~140 acres) on the edge of Barneveld. There is a 255,000 SF main corporate headquarters and production building, as well as an adjacent 30,000 SF warehouse. The main building is the largest in North America with in floor hydronic heating and cooling. The uses within the building are widely varied, and include manufacturing, offices, warehouse spaces, and clean rooms. Mechanical systems include a VAV system, boiler system, the in floor hydronic system, and a heat recovery chiller system.

Presenter:  Matt Heil
Direct Management Company

Matt Heil was born and raised on a dairy and ginseng farm in rural Wisconsin. He worked as a steam pipefitter before attending the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked for some very reputable manufacturing and engineering companies over the past 20 years. He has served on the ASHRAE Madison Board of Governors, culminating in a term as President during the 2010-2011 year.

Student Activities

Student Activities

This month’s meeting will be recognized as one of our two annual “Student Night” monthly meetings.  This year we will hosting “Student Night” in October 2017 and March 2018. The October meeting will be a tour of Vortex Optics in Barneveld, WI. The March 2018 meeting will be held at Union South on the University of Wisconsin – Madison campus. Please help get the word out to our student members and other students that may be interested in HVAC & joining ASHRAE.  We encourage students to attend our meetings. There is no charge for student attendees. We plan to have scholarship applications available at the meeting for those students with at least one more year of school remaining.

We encourage our chapter members to get involved in your local school systems participating in or initiating activities such as classroom or campus visits and science or career fairs.  Whether it is for your son or daughter’s class or for your local school please take advantage of any opportunity to get into schools (K thru 12, college, or university) for classroom visits.  Our ASHRAE chapter receives recognition for any of these visits through President’s Award of Excellence (POAE) points.  If you have or will be participating in a school visit please send me (Jim Kraus) an email (jim.kraus@wisc.edu) indicating Who, What, When, and Where.

Do you have old ASHRAE handbooks sitting on your shelf?  We are looking for your old ASHRAE handbooks to be passed on to the student members.  We distribute the donated books to the students when they attend the monthly ASHRAE meetings, ideally on student night.  Please bring them to a meeting or give me a call (Jim Kraus @ 263-3029) and we can make arrangements for drop off or pick up.  Your donation is greatly appreciated.

I am excited to note that this will be the third consecutive year that University of Wisconsin – Madison will have a group of students entering the ASHRAE design competition through Society. Good luck to this year’s students.

I am looking forward to continued involvement as the Student Activities Chair.

Sincerely,

Jim Kraus
Student Activities Chairperson

CTTC

CTTC UPDATE

While it may seem early, now is a good time to start thinking about the annual ASHRAE Technology Awards.

Established in 1990–1991, the Technology Awards Program applies to new and retrofit applications in seven categories: Commercial Buildings, Institutional Buildings, Health Care Facilities, Industrial Facilities or Processes, Public Assembly, Residential and Alternative or Renewable Energy Use, with separate categories for New and Existing Buildings. Award applications are judged with respect to energy efficiency; indoor air quality, innovation, operation and maintenance, cost effectiveness, environmental impact and quality of presentation.

The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards is threefold:

  1. To recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data.
  2. To communicate innovative systems design to other ASHRAE members.
  3. To highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners.

All current members of ASHRAE and its associate societies may submit entries. Entrants must have had a significant role in the design or development of the project.

Last year we were able to send one project to the regional level.  We hope to see some great submissions again this year, so think of a great project you've done recently! (Note that projects should have a full year of energy usage data by September of 2018.) Winners will be announced for our chapter level at the April meeting. Winners will be sent on to the regional level to compete against other chapters, as several Madison entries did last year.

So start looking through your project portfolio, and feel free to contact me with any questions.
