Technical Session Highlights:

The need to match Power Generation to demand and to avoid the use of expensive standby Power generation to meet short duration peak loads is critical to ensure the reliability of the Power Grid. Demand Response in conjunction with Realtime Pricing (RTP) is a tool employed by many electric power utilities to address this issue. Day-ahead notification of RTP to customers enrolled in the program is at one hour or shorter intervals with on-peak rates much higher than off-peak rates. There are about 24,000 large office buildings in the USA with floor area greater than 100,000 sq. ft. consuming annually 180 billion kWh with most of it occurring during the on-peak period. In this Technical presentation, Dr. Gopal presents a novel methodology to implement HVAC and other control strategies in the Smart Building Facility Management System a day-ahead to respond to RTP for a large office building. The control strategies result in energy and energy cost savings.


Main Presentation Highlights:

Smart Building HVAC Systems: Smart Building Architecture with example problem and analysis for Automatic Fault Detection, Diagnosis and System Restoration in a building HVAC system using Smart Building Facility Management System.  The Smart Speaker aspect deals with Dr. Gopal's experiments with Smart Speakers from an energy analysis point of view for controlling internal loads such as lighting, TV, and laptops and the energy consumed by Smark Speakers themselves for different modes of operation.



Raj Gopal, Ph.D.

Dr. Gopal's current interest is performing Research Studies as a R&D Specialist in Sustainable Energy and Smart Grid. He is a member of ASHRAE and IEEE.  He has served in ASHRAE Energy Calculations and Building Operations Dynamics technical committees, as a member of Standards Committee on Liquid Chilling Packages and as a Forum Chairman on Demand Side Management (DSM). His work experience includes working as a Scientist for leading Building Automation System companies and as a DSM engineer for leading Electric Power utilities and as a full time Consultant for Building Automation System companies. He has taught HVAC, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics at UW Milwaukee and Milwaukee School of Engineering and holds patents in Thermal Energy Storage and Solar Energy. Has published and presented papers in peer reviewed conferences and publications including a lecture at UW Madison's 'Wednesday [email protected] Lab'. Also served as an Editor for ASME's Symposium volumes on "Heat Transfer in Energy Conservation" and "Energy Conservation in Building HVAC Systems". He has worked for 4 years as a Maintenance Engineer for a Multinational company. Dr. Gopal has a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron and MS from IIT Madras, India.
