Technical Session Highlights:

This technical session will give an introduction to the basics of Geothermal HVAC design.  We will discuss how the earth can be used to provide heating and cooling for a building, how a geothermal heat pump works, different types of borefield loops, and some potential long term effects

 

Main Presentation Highlights:

Derek's main presentation will give an overview of some of the sustainable concepts and systems they utilize at Epic, but the focus will be on their geothermal system. We’ll discuss design, operation, maintenance, energy performance, and optimization of the geo system.

Scott Brabender 

 MEP Associates - P.E. Mechanical Engineer

Scott is a professional engineer with 9 years of engineering experience including mechanical and HVAC design for a variety of project sizes, ranging from large campus site utilities and central energy plant systems to smaller building remodels and renovations.  MEP Associates is a multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm specializing in a broad range of technical services and innovative solutions for sustainable, energy efficient systems, and complex projects nationwide, and believe in making compelling, innovative solutions based on strategy that has a point. From large campus geothermal conversions to energy efficiency upgrades, the firm has experience in a wide range of industries and unique qualifications.

Derek Schnabel 

 Epic Systems - Facilities Director

Derek Schnabel is the Facilities Director at Epic Systems – his team oversees the design, operation, maintenance, and growth of Epic System’s properties. Epic’s campus in Verona leverages many sustainable design concepts, one of which is a ~13,000 ton geo exchange system.  Prior to joining Epic, Derek worked for IMEG (previously KJWW Engineering) as a Project Executive for 11 years managing and designing engineering projects of all shapes and sizes.
