Main Presentation Highlights:

The Psychometrics and Subtleties of Drying Hops and Hemp

Starting in 2005, Dan developed a drying and processing method that better preserved the aromas and oils in pelletized hops for the craft brew market to help his hops company push ahead of the larger growers of the Pacific Northwest.  This was primarily achieved by developing a low temperature drying method that provided a better flavor profile than just “Beachwood”.

Fast forward to 2018, after leaving his position at the UW and selling the hops business, Dan landed a Quest, Therma-Stor’s commercial dehumidifier division.  Low and behold, Quest’s Gardening division leads the market in providing dehumidification to the indoor grow market…yes folks, that means cannabis.  Much like the world of hops, the marijuana and hemp market is ripe with misinformation, anecdotal drying/curing methods and an utter lack of understanding of the fundamentals of drying herbaceous materials.  It is truly an art with very little science…and even less engineering.  You can even learn to build your own Hop dryer in 420 easy steps!

In December’s ASHRAE chapter presentation, Dan will provide a humorous trip through the world of processing hops and his insight into the coming world of processing cannabis products.

Presenter

Daniel J. Dettmers

Sales Engineer

Dan Dettmers spent 23 years at the U.W., providing applied research, technical assistance and training to the HVAC and refrigeration industries.  In his spare time, Dan, as part owner of Gorst Valley Hops and Bine Implement, developed harvesting, drying and processing equipment for his own farm and many others in the small-scale commercial hop grower market.  Since the summer of 2018, Dan has been working as a Sales Engineer for Quest commercial/industrial dehumidification equipment where he specializes in expanding Quest’s desiccant offerings to the Cold Chain market.
