President’s Message

Fellow Madison ASHRAE Members,

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues throughout the country, the board has concluded that a remote online webinar will be held this month for our local chapter meeting in place of our normal group get-together.  We are very fortunate to have Steve Kujak join us this month to help educate us on the Future of Refrigerants.  I first met Steve when I lived in LaCrosse working as an intern for Trane, and I can assure you we’re in for a good presentation with an expert on refrigerants in Steve.  Details to follow regarding log-in information from a GoToMeeting link for the presentation.

Please read through the Newsletter highlights below. Many thanks to Mark Miller for his efforts in assembling this information.  Please pay close attention to the golf outing notes, which is currently in flux surrounding the COVID-19 challenges and stay-home orders we are currently experiencing.  There’s a potential depending on how this all plays out over the next few weeks that we will be moving the golf outing to the end of summer/early fall.

Lastly, we still have an open Member at Large position available, as well as an open Research Promotion chair position available.  Please see me or any other Board of Governor member if you have an interest in either of these positions or if you’d like additional details.

Thanks, and hopefully you can all call-in over your lunch hour for this month’s presentation.

Paul Schack

Wisconsin ASHRAE Members Meet with 36 State Congressional Offices

All four Wisconsin ASHRAE Chapters were represented during Wisconsin’s second outreach day at the State Capitol in Madison. On March 5, ASHRAE members visited with staff and elected officials from 36 Congressional offices. The Wisconsin members also hosted an information session in the capital, which was attended by additional staff.

The focus of their message was on ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and the value of timely adoption of the latest edition. Also discussed were local sustainability efforts, indoor air quality and legionella, safety standards and climate issues related to refrigerants and ASHRAE Research and ties to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

CTTC

“Established in 1990–1991, the Technology Awards Program applies to new and retrofit applications in seven categories: Commercial Buildings, Institutional Buildings, Health Care Facilities, Industrial Facilities or Processes, Public Assembly, Residential and Alternative or Renewable Energy Use, with separate categories for New and Existing Buildings.

Award applications are judged with respect to energy efficiency; indoor air quality, innovation, operation and maintenance, cost-effectiveness, environmental impact and quality of presentation.

The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards is threefold:

  1. To recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data.
  2. To communicate innovative systems design to other ASHRAE members.
  3. To highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners.

All current members of ASHRAE and its Associate Societies may submit entries. Entrants must have had a significant role in the design or development of the project.

We hope to see some great submissions again this year, so think of a great project you've done recently! (Note that projects should have a full year of energy usage data by September of 2020.) Entries will be sent on to the regional level to compete against other chapters.

Additional information can be found at:

CRC

Vision 2020-Postponed

The 2020 ASHRAE Region VI Chapters Regional Conference (CRC ) hosted by the Central Illinois Chapter of ASHRAE has been postponed, with hopes of arranging in summer or fall.  It is planned to take place in Peoria, Illinois, however, date to be determined as yet.  Watch for an update!

Region VI is comprised of 11 chapters in the Midwest, including St. Louis in the south, up through Iowa to Minnesota and into North Dakota, over to Wisconsin, and back down through Chicago and Central Illinois. This conference typically draws about 200 attendees, most of whom are ASHRAE members and are highly involved in the HVAC industry. The conference includes social events, ASHRAE business meetings for Region VI, as well as several technical presentations. This year, the technical presentations will be anchored in our theme of “Vision 2020”, which focuses on looking to the future of our industry.

Golf Outing

Madison and Southeast Chapter Golfers,

Well, the situation has made our plans for our June Golf Outing questionable, however the Golf Committee has not given up.   We are hoping we will pull through this pandemic and find some normalcy to golf in June.  So, our plans are developing and first, we are looking or sponsors.  If plans continue positively, we will release early registration in April.

Sponsorships are sought, so reach out to our committee if interested. This is a great event to touch over 100 key people in the Madison and Wisconsin commercial built-up environment.   Get your name on the list.

We lost a key inspirational golfer and Madison Chapter Golf Chair in John Kelly.  John enjoyed golfing in Hawaiian shirts, so the plan is to encourage the dress attire to be in Hawaiian digs.  RIP John Kelly.
