President’s Message

President's Message,

Happy New Year to you all!

Thank you all for joining us last month as we heard from Dane County leadership on their Climate Action Plan, and enjoyed our virtual holiday social afterward with small group conversation and door prizes.   I am looking forward to that social time being back in person some day, but it was great to catch up with those that could make it!

We are starting to look to fill volunteer positions for our 2021-2022 Board of Governors and chair positions.   We also would welcome volunteers to serve on a committee.   Whether you can invest just a little time or more, I'd encourage you to reach out to myself or others on the BOG.

Please see below and join us for our January chapter meeting on January 11th!   This presentation will be provided by an ASHRAE Designated Lecturer on a very applicable topic, and I am sure will be engaging content.

ASHRAE Technology Awards

The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards program is to:

  • Recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data;..
  • Communicate innovative systems designs to other ASHRAE members;
  • Highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners.

Each year the Society may present awards in six categories:

  • Commercial Buildings (New, Existing, Existing Building Commissioning);
  • Institutional Buildings (New, Existing, Existing Building Commissioning)
  • Health Care Facilities (New, Existing, Existing Building Commissioning);

Student Activities

Student Activities

This is my 12th year (2 yrs. as Co-Chair and 10 yrs. as Chair) as the Student Activities Chair. I am sure this one will prove to be my most challenging year while dealing with COVID-19. I plan to keep students engaged in ASHRAE and the field of HVAC throughout the year. As always, I look to all of you, our members, to help with this important task.

I am proud of our two Student ASHRAE chapters at UW-Platteville and UW-Madison. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, they have managed to maintain their chapters and establish another board for the 2020-2021 ASHRAE year. Please join me in welcoming them. The Student Board of Governors for each school is as follows:

UW-Platteville Student ASHRAE chapter BOG:

Chad St.Cyr – President
James McDonough - Vice President
Austin Milligan-Kierzek – Secretary
Max Kisting – Treasurer

Professor Abulkhair Masoom – Student Advisor

UW-Madison Student ASHRAE chapter BOG:

Antonio Pulito – President
Ryan Jara - Vice President
Farold Dias – Secretary
Will Zimmerman – Treasurer

Professor Michael Cheadle – Student Advisor

This month’s meeting is recognized as the first of two annual “Student Night” meetings.  Our other “Student Night” meeting will be held in March 2021. During our March “Student Night” meeting, we make a push to solicit engineering student applications for the annual Gustus L. Larson Scholarship. Four scholarships are awarded for an amount of $1,500 each.

I look forward to continued involvement as the Student Activities Chair.

Sincerely,

Jim Kraus
