President’s Message

Hope everyone is staying dry through the recent rains and flooding. This is an opportunity to help friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and clients in need; do what you can to help them out. This is a great opportunity to show your true colors.

Paul Schack has lined up Raj Gopal to enlighten us on a couple of interesting topics for our September 10 Chapter meeting. The technical session will cover the sources of our electrical power and how we can work hand in hand with utilities to keep it efficient (and as inexpensive as possible!). The main session will cover the application of new popular consumer technologies to control of building HVAC systems.

Many think of ASHRAE as a huge society and forget the "boots-on-the-ground" level at which most of us operate. We are always looking for enthusiastic people to get engaged in Chapter operations. You don't have to do a lot of work to be engaged. Talk to a Board of Governors (BOG) member or a Committee chair to see how you can take part. In particular we are seeking a Member-at-Large for the BOG and members for the Golf, Membership Promotion, Research Promotion, and Chapter Technology Transfer Committees.

See you at the first meeting!

Technical Session - 5 pm (optional) - Demand Response Strategies to Real Time Pricing in Building Energy Systems

Dinner - 6:15 pm

Main Presentation - 7:00 pm - Smart Buildings:Are they better than a Smart Speaker

Technical Session Highlights:

The need to match Power Generation to demand and to avoid the use of expensive standby Power generation to meet short duration peak loads is critical to ensure the reliability of the Power Grid. Demand Response in conjunction with Realtime Pricing (RTP) is a tool employed by many electric power utilities to address this issue. Day-ahead notification of RTP to customers enrolled in the program is at one hour or shorter intervals with on-peak rates much higher than off-peak rates. There are about 24,000 large office buildings in the USA with floor area greater than 100,000 sq. ft. consuming annually 180 billion kWh with most of it occurring during the on-peak period. In this Technical presentation, Dr. Gopal presents a novel methodology to implement HVAC and other control strategies in the Smart Building Facility Management System a day-ahead to respond to RTP for a large office building. The control strategies result in energy and energy cost savings.

Main Presentation Highlights:

Smart Building HVAC Systems: Smart Building Architecture with example problem and analysis for Automatic Fault Detection, Diagnosis and System Restoration in a building HVAC system using Smart Building Facility Management System.  The Smart Speaker aspect deals with Dr. Gopal's experiments with Smart Speakers from an energy analysis point of view for controlling internal loads such as lighting, TV, and laptops and the energy consumed by Smark Speakers themselves for different modes of operation.

Raj Gopa, Ph.D.

Dr. Gopal's current interest is performing Research Studies as a R&D Specialist in Sustainable Energy and Smart Grid. He is a member of ASHRAE and IEEE.  He has served in ASHRAE Energy Calculations and Building Operations Dynamics technical committees, as a member of Standards Committee on Liquid Chilling Packages and as a Forum Chairman on Demand Side Management (DSM). His work experience includes working as a Scientist for leading Building Automation System companies and as a DSM engineer for leading Electric Power utilities and as a full time Consultant for Building Automation System companies. He has taught HVAC, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics at UW Milwaukee and Milwaukee School of Engineering and holds patents in Thermal Energy Storage and Solar Energy. Has published and presented papers in peer reviewed conferences and publications including a lecture at UW Madison's 'Wednesday [email protected] Lab'. Also served as an Editor for ASME's Symposium volumes on "Heat Transfer in Energy Conservation" and "Energy Conservation in Building HVAC Systems". He has worked for 4 years as a Maintenance Engineer for a Multinational company. Dr. Gopal has a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron and MS from IIT Madras, India.

Research Promotion

Society's 2017-18 RP Campaign was successful at meeting and exceeding their goal this past year.  The campaign has been successful meeting their growing goal to provide more funding for research for the building sciences.  The generous donations by companies and more importantly the individuals was wonderful.  The diligent work by the RP committees was very much appreciated.

Want to see how your donations can make a difference? Please watch this short video!

ASHRAE RP: Six Types of Funds

The Madison Chapter fell substantially short of their goal and will be a focus for the year to strive to approach the average member contribution.  Donations can be made online here or you can send a check made out to ASHRAE Research to the following address :

     Trane Company
           Attn: Alex Bakel

Path to passive design: multifamily lessons learned

Tuesday, September 11
Madison, WI
8:00 am–11:45 am | $45

MGE Energy 2030

AIA Wisconsin

Passive building activity has increased exponentially in recent years—from single family residential projects to multifamily, and now the trend is moving towards commercial buildings. This presentation takes a look at several low and midrise multifamily projects across the country that were constructed at 0-5% additional cost over an EnergyStar baseline. Successful construction techniques and lessons learned will be discussed.

Following the technical training, there will be a panel of speakers that will share a case study of Madison’s landmark affordable housing multifamily project, Rethke Terrace. This project reached Passive House and LEED Platinum certification earlier this year. It became the first multifamily project in Madison (and the Midwest!) to reach this rigorous sustainable design goal. Attendees are also invited to join the developer and the design team for a tour of Rethke Terrace on Madison’s east side. Learn more and register today.

Technical Committee Member Highlights

Our Madison chapter members are heavily involved in ASHRAE Technical Committees (TCs). These committees bring together experts from across the HVAC industry to:

  1. prepare the text of ASHRAE Handbook chapters
  2. create, coordinate, and supervise Society-sponsored research projects
  3. present programs at ASHRAE meetings
  4. review technical papers
  5. evaluate the need for standards
  6. advise the Society on all aspects of the technology it embraces

TCs therefore play a big part in advancing the mission of ASHRAE. Through the year, we will be highlighting several of Madison member’s TC involvement. We hope this allows you all to better understand what is happening in a variety of TCs, and perhaps become more involved in TCs yourselves.

If you’d like to share what you are doing within a TC, please contact:

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!!
