President’s Message

President's Message,

Thank you all for joining us last month as we continued our technical programming with an engaging panel discussion on HVAC strategies during a pandemic.   It was interesting to hear multiple viewpoints on our market this year.  Thank you to local members Fred Betz and Carol Mori for your participation on the panel.

We are continuing to look for volunteers to take on additional positions within our ASHRAE chapter, either at a board level, committee chair level, or simply serving on a committee to lend a hand.   If you or someone in your organization might be interested in more information, please reach out!

Please join us for our December chapter meeting on December 14th!   We have an exciting opportunity to hear from Dane County leadership regarding their Climate Action Plan, and will also be hosting a fun social afterward complete with door prizes in place of our annual holiday chapter meeting.  I hope to see you all there!

Presentation - 4 pm  - ASHRAE Community’s Role in Dane County’s Climate Action Plan

Virtual Holiday Party - 5:00 pm - Prizes games, a contest for holiday-themed outfits

Transformational change is coming – What role can you play in your professional capacity to help our community co-create a healthier, more prosperous future?

In April 2020 Dane County issued an ambitious and comprehensive economy-wide Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP lays out strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sources by 50% by 2030 with the ultimate aim of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Joe Parisi, Dane County Executive, Kathy Kuntz, Acting Director of the Dane County Office of Energy & Climate Change and Scott Hackel, Director of Research and Innovation at Slipstream, will talk about the CAP and its implications for ASHRAE members working in Dane County.

Learning objectives for this session are:

  1. Attendees will be able to list the key climate change trends already confronting Dane County and be able to identify at least three ways the design community can address those trends.
  2. Attendees will become familiar with deep decarbonization as a climate action strategy and learn how it applies to emissions in Dane County.
  3. Attendees will be able to identify at least five actionable strategies for low emission homes and buildings that they can apply to their work.
  4. Attendees will become familiar with at least four programs or resources that will support their efforts in realizing low-emission buildings.

In addition to learning about the County’s climate action efforts and the opportunities for the ASHRAE community in that effort, the session will include time for questions and comments.

Madison ASHRAE holiday party and Fundraiser for ASHRAE Research Projects

Whether you’re celebrating the Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas or one of the many other December festivals, stick around after the main presentation for games and prizes, and a chance to meet other members of our chapter. Please dress up in a holiday-themed outfit and have your camera on for a chance to win fabulous prizes.

Although the meeting is free to attend, we encourage you to make a $15 or more donation to the society to fund research projects.  We've recruited a few vendors to sponsor some prizes, so we'll have a drawing for some door prizes in addition to the costume awards. A contribution to RP is encouraged, but not required. You must be present on the zoom call in order to win a prize.

We’ll wrap up organized activities by 5:30, but anyone who would like to stick around for further networking or conversation is welcome to stay on until 6.

Student Activities

Student Activities

This is my 12th year (2 yrs. as Co-Chair and 10 yrs. as Chair) as the Student Activities Chair. I am sure this one will prove to be my most challenging year while dealing with COVID-19. I plan to keep students engaged in ASHRAE and the field of HVAC throughout the year. As always, I look to all of you, our members, to help with this important task.

I am proud of our two Student ASHRAE chapters at UW-Platteville and UW-Madison. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, they have managed to maintain their chapters and establish another board for the 2020-2021 ASHRAE year. Please join me in welcoming them. The Student Board of Governors for each school is as follows:

UW-Platteville Student ASHRAE chapter BOG:

Chad St.Cyr – President
James McDonough - Vice President
Austin Milligan-Kierzek – Secretary
Max Kisting – Treasurer

Professor Abulkhair Masoom – Student Advisor

UW-Madison Student ASHRAE chapter BOG:

Antonio Pulito – President
Ryan Jara - Vice President
Farold Dias – Secretary
Will Zimmerman – Treasurer

Professor Michael Cheadle – Student Advisor

This month’s meeting is recognized as the first of two annual “Student Night” meetings.  Our other “Student Night” meeting will be held in March 2021. During our March “Student Night” meeting, we make a push to solicit engineering student applications for the annual Gustus L. Larson Scholarship. Four scholarships are awarded for an amount of $1,500 each.

I look forward to continued involvement as the Student Activities Chair.

Sincerely,

Jim Kraus
